Editorial 101-11: Irving Layton Centenary
He is also important because he was determined to bring literature (poetry) to the consciousness of Canada and Canadians. At a time when Canada was content to be a colony, Layton spoke loud and clear and in a way that disturbed the existing colonial state of mind.

Editorial 101-09: To Everything There is a Season
This past summer, Canadians lost a man most of us hardly knew but were deeply touched by. We lost the promise of what might or could have been. Had he lived, he might have led us through a heavy winter to a hopeful spring.

Editorial 101-08: Where the SUN don't shine!
Good News/Bad news. The bad news is that there is an all-out war on the arts. The problem is, most artists don’t know it or don’t want to admit it. The good news is that, fortunately, no one else is aware of it either.

Editorial 101-07: Multiculturalism: YES/NON
Most “pro-multicultural” people have multicultural allegiances and believe that variety is the spice of life. We believe that this is also true of many who are native French of Quebec.

Editorial 101-06: “g” as in Gold
Artie Gold is one of the few true original voices in Canadian poetry. His poems deserve serious attention and dissemination. We have enough second-rate poseurs from sea to sea to sea. We need the freshness, vitality, wit, and depth of Gold’s poetry to set the Gold standard.

Editorial 101-05: NMFG
In spite of a setback, Poetry Quebec begins its second year with renewed energy. In the spring, we applied to the Canada Council so that we could start paying our contributors. We wanted to practice what we preached in a “Soapbox” that appeared in Issue 2 called “Pay the Poets.”

Editorial 101-04: National Poetry Month
Poetry (art) has been around for as long as humans have been conscious. Even the earliest artifacts— pots, tools and cave walls – were decorated. And although these earliest forms of poetry may have been forms of prayer, they do show the imaginative process at work.

Editorial 101-03: Guns are not Enough
And what happens when the writer’s tongue, goosequill, pen or keyboard goes silent. In Canada, not much because we’ve had very little in the way of engaged poetry. In other countries it sometimes meant the death of a poet and also of liberty.

Editorial 101-02: A Loss
In the ongoing effort to improve this magazine, we have added a few new sections. We are fortunate that Elias Letelier, the “third Stitch” in our editorial cloth, is such a wizard at this digital technology. It is not only his wizardry that makes this magazine possible, but his belief in the necessity for such a magazine. In fact, he has been pushing for this magazine for a couple of years now. And it is his “working like a Third World peasant” (his expression) that has finally made it possible.
