Contest: 2-Day Poem Contest 2012 hosted by CV2 magazine

Registration is now open for CV2 magazine’s annual 2-Day Poem Contest. This contest challenges participants to write an original poem in 48 hours — with only one catch. The final poem must include ten words that CV2 provides. These words are released at midnight, April 14, 2012 (Central Standard Time). Participants then have 48 hours to use each of these words at least once in an original poetry composition. Prizes include cash, publication, and a copy of the issue containing the winners, not to mention a whole weekend of wordy entertainment. Deadline for registration is April 8, 2012. Visit the website for full details: www.contemporaryverse2.ca/index.php/contests/2-day-contest. You can also join the Facebook event for updates: www.facebook.com/events/276509749081033/

Call for Proposals: JackPine Press

JackPine Press accepts proposals for collaborations of text and design to be launched as limited edition hand-bound chapbooks in Fall 2012 and beyond. Chosen creators receive funding with which to acquire all necessary materials and undertake the printing of the text and visual content. Chapbooks are then assembled by the creators themselves, in consultation with the JackPine Press collective. The most important part of any proposal is the prototype. This is the physical version of the chapbook itself as envisioned by you. The prototype is the means by which the collective is able to assess whether or not the prospective contributors will be able to devise a design that can be successfully replicated while continuing to meet JackPine’s standards. In addition to the prototype, please also send a statement of intent, each collaborator’s CV, and a projected budget. The deadline for projects intended to launch in Fall 2012 is April 15th 2012. The deadline for projects intended to launch in Spring 2013 October 15th 2012. For complete and detailed submission guidelines, please visit: www.jackpinepress.com/guidelines.php

Writing great dialogue

Atwater Library Auditorium: 1200 Atwater Ave.

Great dialogue brings life to fiction, but how is it written? How can passages of dialogue feel realistic without being dull, or convey action without seeming forced? Join authors Shawn Klomparens (Jessica Z., Two Years, No Rain) and Catherine McKenzie (Spin, Arranged) for a workshop on crafting tight, narrative-propelling dialogue. Participants are welcomed (but not required) to submit up to five pages via email by March 15 for possible discussion during the session.

How to Write a Query Letter

Atwater Library Auditorium: 1200 Atwater Ave.

Getting an agent to represent you can be a difficult process. An essential tool is drafting the right query letter to get an agent’s attention and make her want to read your work. Join authors Shawn Klomparens (Jessica Z., Two Years, No Rain) and Catherine McKenzie (Spin, Arranged) for a workshop on crafting compelling query letters. Successful queries will be broken down, and a five-step template (Introduction, Summary, Hype, Conclusion and Closing) will be discussed. Participants are welcomed (but not required) to submit a sample query letter via email by March 15 for possible discussion during the session.

Contact catherinemckenzieauthor@gmail.com to register and submit materials.

Taking The Plunge as a Freelancer

9am to 4:30pm
Concordia University, Downtown Campus;

Room TBA

Whether you are thinking about becoming a freelance editor in the future or have already taken the plunge, this seminar will provide you with a wealth of practical information. The approach is down-to-earth and realistic; the facts and tips are all based on the real-life experiences of the seminar leader and others.

Topics covered include evaluating and improving your editing skills; acquiring the tools you need; getting work, including finding those all-important first jobs and translating them into a regular client base; networking, both graciously and successfully; creating a freelance résumé that works; being your own manager; and getting paid.

Elizabeth d'Anjou has 18 years of experience as a freelance editor with a diverse clientele, from textbook publishers to corporations to non-profit agencies. She also teaches copy editing at Ryerson University. She has worked in-house, freelance, and in-between, and now embraces both the joys and the challenges of self-employment from her home in Prince Edward County.

Presented by the Editors' Association of Canada
